Destination Spotlight: Montenegro

Where Adriatic charm meets undiscovered luxury.

Nestled along the glittering Adriatic coastline, Montenegro is one of Europe’s best-kept secrets — a country that blends rugged mountains, serene bays, medieval towns and a dash of Riviera glamour. After visiting in July 2023, it quickly became one of my personal favourites, and it’s easy to see why. Montenegro offers a unique mix of natural beauty, historic depth and luxurious escapes, making it ideal for romantic getaways, refined road trips, and secluded summer holidays.

Getting There from the UK

Montenegro is more accessible than many realise. Fly direct to Tivat Airport during the summer months, or connect via Dubrovnik, Croatia, just a scenic drive away (don’t forget your passport — you’ll cross a border!). Alternatively, flights via Podgorica open up options year-round. Many travellers choose to pair Montenegro with a few days in Dubrovnik, offering a two-nation escape in one luxury itinerary.

Best Time to Visit

Montenegro is a year-round destination, but your experience can vary depending on the season:

  • Summer (June–August): Expect warm, sunny days (25–35°C) perfect for coastal exploration, yachting and beach lounging.
  • Spring and Autumn (May, September–October): Quieter and cooler, ideal for hiking and sightseeing with fewer crowds.
  • Winter (December–March): A lesser-known ski destination — head inland to the Durmitor Mountains for snow-covered adventure.

Things to See & Do

  • Kotor Old Town: A UNESCO World Heritage site, this walled city is packed with cobbled lanes, quaint squares and baroque architecture. Climb the fortress at sunrise for unbeatable views of the Bay of Kotor.
  • Perast & Our Lady of the Rocks: Visit the picture-perfect village of Perast and take a boat to the floating church island — a serene and spiritual experience.
  • Budva Riviera: For those craving a livelier scene, Budva offers golden beaches, buzzing nightlife and chic beach clubs.
  • Sveti Stefan: This exclusive islet-turned-luxury-resort is one of Montenegro’s most photographed landmarks — even if you’re not staying there, it’s worth a visit.
  • Lake Skadar: Montenegro’s largest lake is a tranquil paradise perfect for kayaking, birdwatching and wine-tasting in surrounding villages.
  • Bay of Kotor boat trip: Charter a private boat for the day and cruise the fjord-like bay in style, stopping to swim in crystal-clear waters.

Where to Eat

  • Catovica Mlini (Morinj): Set in a former mill with lush gardens and a stream running through it — one of Montenegro’s most atmospheric dining spots.
  • Galion (Kotor): Elegant dining with a view of the harbour and old town — perfect for seafood lovers.
  • Restaurant Conte (Perast): Waterfront dining with superb local wines and fresh catch-of-the-day.
  • Dukley Beach Lounge (Budva): Sophisticated, modern cuisine with beach club vibes and panoramic sea views.

Luxury Tip

For the ultimate indulgence, base yourself at One&Only Portonovi, Montenegro’s first ultra-luxury resort on the edge of Boka Bay. It offers a private beach, world-class spa and dining by Michelin-starred chefs — perfect for honeymoons or stylish escapes. For something more boutique, consider Aman Sveti Stefan (seasonal), set on its own island — a truly unique stay.
