Destination Spotlight: Japan

Where centuries-old tradition meets cutting-edge innovation

Japan is a land of mesmerising contrasts—where ancient shrines sit quietly beneath neon-lit skyscrapers and samurai spirit coexists with robot waiters. From the meditative stillness of a Kyoto temple to the electric buzz of Tokyo, every corner of Japan offers a sensory journey like no other. Whether you’re drawn by culture, cuisine, cherry blossoms or snow-covered slopes, Japan is an all-year-round destination that rewards every kind of traveller—with extra sparkle for those looking for a luxury or honeymoon-worthy escape.

Best Time to Visit

Japan is truly a year-round destination, with each season offering something unique:

  • Spring (March–May): Cherry blossom season draws global admiration. Think hanami picnics under a blizzard of pink petals.
  • Summer (June–August): Lush countryside, colourful festivals, and time to explore off-the-beaten-track islands like Okinawa.
  • Autumn (September–November): Mild weather and incredible fall colours—perfect for train journeys and temple-hopping.
  • Winter (December–February): Snow sports in Hokkaido, snow monkeys in hot springs, and festive illuminations across the cities.

Getting There from the UK

Reaching Japan from the UK is easier than ever. You can fly direct from London to Tokyo or Osaka in around 12 hours, with top-tier carriers such as British Airways, Japan Airlines, and ANA offering seamless service. Prefer to combine your journey with a stopover? Many travellers opt to connect via Europe or the Middle East, making for a smooth and often more flexible route.

You can also build a multi-stop itinerary, combining Tokyo with Kyoto, Hakone, or even a beach break in Okinawa. I flew into Tokyo and back from Osaka for example ticking off many Japanese cities along the route.

Tokyo: Urban Energy in Overdrive

In Tokyo, every neighbourhood is its own micro-world. Discover high fashion in Harajuku, historic temples in Asakusa, and skyline views from the Shibuya Sky observatory.

Luxury Experiences:

  • Dine at world-renowned restaurants like Sukiyabashi Jiro or Narisawa.
  • Stay at The Aman Tokyo or Park Hyatt Shinjuku, offering sky-high spas and sweeping city views.
  • Join a private sushi masterclass or tea ceremony for cultural immersion with a personal touch.

Kyoto: Cultural Heartland

Kyoto is the Japan of your imagination—geishas, golden temples, bamboo forests, and soul-soothing traditions. This was one of my highlight cities, I actually preferred it over Tokyo and Osaka!

Don’t Miss:

  • A guided stroll through Fushimi Inari’s 10,000 torii gates at sunrise.
  • Zen meditation at Ryoan-ji Temple.
  • Dinner with a Maiko (apprentice geisha) in a private ryotei.
  • Luxurious stays at The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto or Gion Hatanaka Ryokan.

Hakone: Hot Springs & Mt Fuji Views

An easy escape from Tokyo, Hakone offers peaceful lakes, open-air art museums, and indulgent onsen (hot spring) retreats with views of Mt Fuji.

Indulge in:

  • A stay at Gora Kadan, a five-star ryokan blending tradition with contemporary design.
  • A cruise on Lake Ashi followed by a scenic cable car ride above volcanic valleys.
  • Private onsen experiences perfect for couples or honeymooners.

Hokkaido & the Japanese Alps: Winter Wonders

For luxury ski holidays, Japan rivals the Alps. Niseko, in Hokkaido, is world-famous for powder snow and stylish lodges.

Winter Highlights:

  • Stay at Zaborin Ryokan or Park Hyatt Niseko Hanazono.
  • Go snowshoeing, night skiing, or soak in a snowy outdoor onsen.
  • Pair your trip with the Sapporo Snow Festival or a gourmet tour of Japan’s northern seafood.

Why Japan for Your Next Luxury Escape?

Whether you’re a culture-seeker, a couple planning a honeymoon, or simply craving an unforgettable adventure with or without the five-star polish, Japan offers a kaleidoscope of experiences you’ll treasure forever.
