Destination Spotlight: Bali

Where serenity, culture, and luxury meet tropical bliss

Bali is the very definition of tropical paradise, combining vibrant culture, lush landscapes, and luxury experiences into one irresistible destination. Whether you’re planning a honeymoon, anniversary getaway or a once-in-a-lifetime holiday, Bali offers something truly extraordinary. I returned in June 2024 for my second time, and it confirmed what I already knew: this island shines even brighter when you invest in the full luxury experience.

Getting There from the UK

Flights from the UK to Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) in Denpasar typically connect via Doha, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Dubai. Most luxury hotels and resorts offer private transfers, and travelling between destinations—whether by private driver or fast boat—is part of the charm.

Ubud: Culture, Wellness & Jungle Luxury

Nestled in central Bali, Ubud is the spiritual and cultural heart of the island. Surrounded by rice terraces and rainforest, it’s a haven for travellers seeking wellness, creativity, and tranquillity. Personally, Ubud was my favourite part of Bali. There’s something magical about the energy here—the way the morning mist clings to the treetops, the scent of incense drifting from temple ceremonies, and the feeling of peace that wraps around you like the warm jungle air.

Top Experiences

  • Tegalalang Rice Terraces: Take a guided walk through these iconic UNESCO-listed paddies.
  • Tirta Empul Water Temple: Participate in a traditional Balinese purification ceremony.
  • Wellness & Yoga: Enjoy sunrise yoga or holistic healing at retreats like The Yoga Barn or Fivelements Retreat.
  • Make Your Own Chocolate: Try a bean-to-bar workshop at Pod Chocolate just outside Ubud.

Gili Islands: Barefoot Luxury & Marine Magic

A short fast boat ride from Bali’s east coast brings you to the Gili Islands, where white-sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, and relaxed island charm await.

Top Experiences

  • Snorkel with Sea Turtles: Gili Meno’s Turtle Point is a must.
  • Sunset Horseback Ride: Ride along the beach at golden hour on Gili Trawangan.
  • Stand-Up Paddleboarding & Kayaking: Glide over shallow reefs just offshore.
  • Private Boat Charter: Cruise around the Gilis in style, stopping for snorkelling and picnics.

Nusa Dua: Refined Beachfront Resorts

If it’s 5-star beachfront living you crave, Nusa Dua delivers. This elegant enclave is known for its pristine beaches, exclusive resorts, and relaxing pace—the perfect end to a Balinese adventure.

Top Experiences

  • Luxury Spa Days: Rejuvenate with Balinese treatments at Kayumanis Spa or The Ritz-Carlton Spa.
  • Play Golf: Tee off at Bali National Golf Club, surrounded by tropical gardens.
  • Private Beach Picnics & Candlelit Dinners: Many resorts offer bespoke dining by the ocean.
  • Day Trips to Nusa Penida: Visit the iconic Kelingking Beach and snorkel with manta rays.

When to Go

Bali is a year-round destination, but actually has a different rainy reason to the rest of Asia, making it great for British summer holidays.

  • Dry Season (May–September) is ideal for sun-lovers and adventure seekers—expect blue skies and low humidity.
  • Wet Season (October–April) still offers warm temperatures and lush greenery, with brief tropical showers—great for spa escapes and quieter resorts.

June, when I last visited, was particularly beautiful: sunny, dry, and vibrant—but with fewer crowds than July and August.
